This week’s Course of the Week’ was held for Choices Care in Scotland. This course ran on 14th & 15th December and was slightly different from our normal courses in so much that it was held over 2 days and involved 3 participants who had already been trained by another training provider.
The 2 day Handling People with Special Needs V2 (Adults) course allowed them the participants to use their existing experience from another training provider and completed a ‘condensed’ version of the course. The week’s ‘Course of the Week’ took place at West Oaks School in Leeds, the 5 day Handling People with Special Needs ‘trainers’ course ran from 7th – 11th December 2009 and it was delivered by Janet Hunt.
The course was very well received and judging by the pictures - all of the participants seemed to enjoy it ! Pictured from left to right we have Shelley Williams from Wakefield Council, Tracie Logue from the Northern Trust over in Northern Ireland, Cathie Ward from West Oaks School, Leanne Newton from Ganton Special School in Hull and last but by no means least we have Sharon Tipping from Merefield School in Southport.

This week’s ‘Course of the Week’ comes from Greenmead Primary School in Wandsworth, London. The course took place from 30th November to 4th December 2009 and it was delivered by Debbie Palfrey. The Handling People with Special Needs (Education) programme trains individuals to become Moving & Handling Key Trainers and also teaches them how to carry out detailed Risk Assessments.

This week’s Course of the Week just happened to be a 1 day refresher course we did for the existing ‘Key Trainers’ within Stirling Council. The course took place on Friday 13th November but we’re glad to report no mishaps ! Taking part in the course we had – Darren Hunter, Pamela Armstrong, Scott Fawcett, Jenne McIntyre and Natalie Mclurg.
In the first photo we see Darren & Pamela doing their ‘worst’ to assist Scott, next we have Natalie & Jennifer with Pamela acting as the patient. In the 3rd photo we have our trainer Jane Hammond Hawkins with Jennifer, Pamela once again takes the part of the client (I think she was tired)…and last but not least we have Scott gently assisting Natalie.

This Handling People with Special Needs – Education four day course was held at Dundee City Council on behalf of the education department from the 19th -22nd October 2009 and was delivered by out very own Debbie Palfrey. Centaur has worked with Dundee City Councils education department for over 10 years.

This weeks ‘Course of The Week’ took place at Thomas Wolsey School in Ipswich, Suffolk. It ran from 12th – 16th October and we had 4 attendees. The Handling People with Special Needs (Education) programme was delivered by Janet Hunt at the school which has recently moved from its old site to a brand new purpose built centre alongside Thurleston High School. The course received some excellent comments and feedback such as “brilliant and fantastic course” – “Janet was great and so knowledgeable” – “presented all aspects of the course in a good un pressured way” From left to right we have Sheila Frood and Debbie Sparke, the other 2 attendees were Karen Edwards and Christina Hyde.

This weeks ‘Course of the Week’ comes from Portland School in Sunderland. It’s the 2nd course of its type we have organised for the Council but this time it was attended by a number of candidates from further a field. Delivered from 21st -25th September by Janet Hunt, our lead trainer for Special Needs Education, the course was a great success.

This weeks’ ‘Course of the Week’ came from the National Centre for Young People with Epilepsy in Lingfield, Surrey. The 5 day Handing People with Special Needs course ran from September 7th – 11th. The National Centre for Young People with Epilepsy (NCYPE) is a national charity for children and young people aged 5 to 25 with epilepsy and other neurological conditions.
Centaur has been training trainers here since September 2001 when we delivered our first course, our involvement has continued throughout those years and we are happy to welcome the latest addition of newly trained ‘Key Trainers’ – pictured from left to right we have Linda Bayman, Glen Boreland and Julie Reynolds. Maybe only Julie can tell us exactly what’s going on in the 2nd photograph…

This weeks 'course of the week' was a Load Management Theory and Client Handling Techniques Masterclass for CLS Care Services held at Warrington running from 2nd September until 4th September 2009.

This weeks 'course of the week' was a Load Management Theory and Client Handling Techniques Masterclass for Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Trust starting on the 21st July until 23rd July 09.
Centaur has a long lasting partnership with the trust going back to 1996. This training session is part of our ongoing contract to maintain and refresher a large team of Keytrainers, this team will be expanded to all most 40 individuals by the end of the year.
A previously trained Keytrainer for the trust, Peter Sutton, is this year’s recipient of the Centaur Training Keytrainer of the Year Award, for more details about this please see the article in “Back Issues”

This weeks 'course of the week' comes from Marie Curie Cancer Care in Glasgow held from the 13th July until 15th July 09.

Brand new moving and handling team for Basingstoke and North Hampshire NHS Trust. The new team which was trained by Pam Sherliker is expected to hit the ground running and will be training right across the whole of the trust.

This weeks course of the week was for Falkirk Council social work department held from 30th June -3rd July 09. Falkirk council have been a client of Centaur Training for well over 10 years, this been one of many projects delivered over an on going basis.

This week’s ‘Course of the Week’ came from the very special surroundings of The Avenue School in Reading, Berkshire. Our trainer Janet Hunt was on hand to deliver a 1 day ‘refresher’ course which took place on 26th June. The ‘refresher’ courses are held for anyone who has been previously trained as a Centaur ‘Key Trainer’. A lot of our clients are now opting for an annual practical refresher rather than the 6 monthly paper option.
The school recently moved from their old premises to a wonderful new building and as always they gave Janet a very warm welcome, not to mention the ‘private’ parking space ! The course was very well received (as always) and thoroughly enjoyed by the 3 participants who we have pictured, from left to right we have Veronica Armstrong, Mary Harris and Marian Headon. The numbers were 1 down from last year as Martin Hall is retiring at the end of term, may we take this opportunity to wish Martin an enjoyable, healthy retirement !
Janet was truly overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and desire of the staff and was left speechless (almost) when she was presented with a very special gift. This weeks’ ‘Course of the Week’ was delivered up in Scotland for Choices Care. The course took place from 1st – 5th June and was entitled Handling People with Special Needs V2, it is specific to those people working with Adults with physical special needs and / or learning difficulties and therefore it was ideal for the folk of Choices Care.
The 5 day programme seemed to down very well with excellent feedback from both trainer and candidates alike. Pictured in the group photo from left to right (back row) we have Craig Stewart and Linda McAlorum, in the front row we have, Emily Peacock, Thomas Brolly, Carol Perkins, Marion McKinna and Charlene Carswell. In the 2nd photo Thomas seems to be enjoying himself a little too much as Emily, Linda and Carol look on in disbelief…
This weeks ‘Course of the Week’ took place at East Anglian Childrens Hospice in Cambridge. The 5 day Handling People with Special Needs (Education) course took place from 18th – 22nd May and was delivered by our lead paediatric trainer Janet Hunt. The course is designed to take candidates through an intense but enjoyable 5 day programme leading to them being able to deliver training directly to front line staff within their own organisation. Pictured from left to right we have Barbara Jenge, Caroline Church (and Maisy), Natalie Bulow and Anna Cue. Hats off to Caroline & Natalie who endured a 4 hour round trip each day – now that’s what we call dedication !


This weeks’ ‘Course of the Week’ was held at St. Francis Hospice in Romford, Essex. The 3 day Load Management Theory & Client Handling Techniques course ran from 20th – 22nd May. This weeks ‘Course of the Week’ took place at the Munro Rehab centre in Glasgow. The Load Management Theory & Client Handling Techniques 3 day programme ran from 13th – 15th May. Pictured from left to right (in the 1st photograph) we have Lillian Wadham (Carnegie College), Madeline Smith (The Richmond Fellowship), Paul Cull (The Richmond Fellowship) and Louise Abernethy (The Richmond Fellowship). Judging by the smiles on heir faces I think it would be fair to say they enjoyed it !
This Weeks 'Course of the Week' was held in Blackpool from 11th -14 May, pictured from left to right are Lilian Morris and Carol Cook from Red Marsh School ,Gillian Bond from Highfurlong School and Carol Bithell also from Red Marsh School .
All smiles on successful completion of the course, despite finding it challenging .
All commented that they realised they had adsorbed and learnt a great deal and they all passed with flying colours!
More people handling trainers for Marie Curie Cancer Care! The latest instalment with the group means seven new trainers.

The Centaur trainer on this occasion was Pam Sherliker, (the Emma Peal of the moving and handling world) who has delivered at least six courses for the charity in the last 18 months. The course was held a Marie Curie Cancer Care Centre in Hampstead from the 6th – 8th April 09.
This course was a one day refresher session for existing load only Keytrainers held on the 2nd April 2009 at Marie Curie Cancer Care Falkirk. This day was held in the warehouse and is especially relevant to the candidates who train warehouse and shop workers.
This week’s ‘Course of the Week’ comes from way up in Elgin, Moray. The ’Handling People with Special Needs’ (Education) 5 day programme was held at The Heritage Centre, a great looking venue in the heart of Elgin. It took place from 9th – 13th March and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The participants travelled from far and wide to attend this course, pictured (from left to right) are Murdo Mackay – Murdo travelled from Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis, Sheena Mackinnon from Mortlach Primary School in Moray, Liz Gray from Dr. Gray’s Hospital in Elgin, Fiona Aitken from the Schools Service on The Shetland Islands and last but not least Ann O’Hagan from Kilpatrick School, West Dunbartonshire Council. The course was delivered by Janet Hunt our lead trainer for paediatric courses and we’d all like to know what joke Janet told just before she took the 2nd photo !
This week’s course of the week is brought to you by Maes Ebbw School in Newport. It’s the second Master Class course Centaur have delivered for Newport LEA. Our trainer Debbie Palrey who is also the main moving & handling trainer for Cardiff LEA said she enjoyed delivering the course and the group were really full of enthusiasm, all in all a very enjoyable course indeed.

The course took place from 26th – 30th January, entitled Handling People with Special Needs (Education) this 5 day ‘Trainers’ programme took 4 candidates through all aspects of manual handling training required when working with children with physical special needs and learning difficulties.
